November 5th was a fitting date for the Annual Craft Fair which was held in the Parish Hall and it provided an enjoyable prelude to Guy Fawkes festivities. The Photographic Society were present for the second year running and had a stall selling the new 2012 Calendars which can be viewed in our gallery. Also on sale were mounted photographs, framed pictures and photo cards. The Fair was well attended and there were many compliments for our work. Sales were down on last year but a creditable £300 was achieved including some sales from the Café. Calendars are on sale at Bobby’s shop and the Foyer Café priced at £7.99 and cards are on sale also at the Foyer Café as usual throughout the year
The July meeting of the Photographic Society welcomed visiting speaker and local landscape photographer David Taylor, who gave a fascinating talk on the subject of light. David structured his talk into four categories morning light, evening light , night and theatrical light and provided many insights and tips on how to deal with the challenges of capturing of images in each light area.
Again the message for members from David was clear, that a landscape photographer needs to be dedicated and disciplined enough to go out in all weathers. The first rule of landscape photography we were reminded was “be there”.
We would like to thank David for his valuable time and we encourage readers to visit David’s web site at www.davidtaylorphotography.co.uk

Roger Clegg Visits the Riding Mill Photographic Society
Roger Clegg visited the Riding Mill Photographic Society as a guest speaker.
Roger Clegg our guest speaker delivered a fascinating talk with a stunning set of images captured both in digital and film format, and demonstrated how he achieved such incredible variations at the same locations throughout the seasons. He described how he turned from Amateur to Professional and how he set out to make a difference. His message was all but clear. In order to achieve the results he desired required planning, dedication and perseverance and the willpower to get up early and visit the location time after time to secure the image he had planned. Roger explained the tools he used in his planning and in the photography itself. First he used a simple sun calculator and second a Depth of Field (DOF) calculator or chart. We have found computerised equivalents of these tools. First visit www.suncalc.net for a really useful sun calculator and secondly visit www.dofmaster.com for an aid to help you determine the hyper-focal distance of your camera and lens combination. There is also an app available for dofmaster which is £1.19 but a perfectly good free app is available called field tools.
About Roger: An award-winning photographer, Roger Clegg lives in Hexham, just 20 minutes from the place that has become his abiding passion – Hadrian’s Wall. Roger embraced photography professionally after a career in business and then as a lecturer. He has captured the contrasting moods and timeless scenes of Hadrian’s Wall from east to west, and is responsible, for the iconic scenes on the side of Northern Rail trains; the pictures used for marketing Hadrian’s Wall and the British Museum’s Hadrian exhibition in 2008, and the book The Spirit of Hadrian’s Wall.
His picture of Sycamore Gap at midsummer with walkers won the Northumberland National Park prize in the Landscape Photographer of the Year Awards 2009.
Finally Roger Clegg is exhibiting at the Biscuit Factory in Newcastle from June 10
Our next meeting is on July 13th and we will again be running a computer session before the main talk for those who are interested

** STOP PRESS **
The 2011 Riding Mill Photographic Society Exhibition was a resounding success. Held at the weekend, 2/3rd April 2011, the Riding Mill Parish Hall was home to forty carefully mounted and displayed prints. Each member had two prints and were on display to the public and available for sale. The exhibition achieved a turnover of over £800, the profits of which will be donated to the Parish Hall Trust which manages the hall and is home to the photographic society. As well as prints, mounted photographs were on-sale as well as notelets, teas, coffees and a selection of home made cakes donated by local people. Each day saw a strong stream of visitors to the attraction.
The Parish Hall Trust have kindly agreed to allow the society to house the remaining photographs on permenant display at the Hall.
For further details of the images, please visit the Riding Mill Photographic Society Gallery on Picasaweb

Ends.
With the dark nights and dull days, this is a perfect opportunity to practice some still life photography and get those creative juices flowing. All members are challenged to produce a photograph with a bottle as the subject, and upload their results to a dedicated gallery on the website. This will give an opportunity to share creative and technical ideas, and encourage members to get photographing. Members can post as many images as they like.
The first person to upload a picture onto the gallery gets to choose the next challenge!

The date for the Riding Mill Photographic Society Exhibition has been set for the 2nd and 3rd April 2011. The exhibition was due to take place in December 2011 but was cancelled due to the adverse weather. Tickets will be available on the door or in advance from Bobby’s shop in the village.
As a result of the severe weather and the prediction of more to follow this coming week, after taking advice, we have decided it is in the best interest to cancel the Photographic Exhibition scheduled for this coming weekend. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. Guests that have already purchased advance tickets may obtain a refund from their agent or outlet. The Exhibition will go ahead in early 2011, and once a date has been set, we will post further details on this web site and in the media.
